David Street
The project at David Street is part of Newham council’s Wave 1 Small Sites development programme. The direct development by the council will replace 36 disused garages with 12 new family homes, consisting of eight 3-bedroom and four 4-bedroom wheelchair houses all for affordable rent.
Very few of the existing houses along David Street face the street and their front gardens are predominantly parking space. Newground’s design activates the street with a consistent frontage to the terrace of houses and a rhythm of front doors, inspired by an established London housing typology. The proposals bring David Street to life and enhance the sense of community and security, further reinforced by adding legibility and prominence to two existing pedestrian routes.
The 3-storey street elevation is punctuated by roof terraces to each house at second floor, which provide additional outdoor space to complement the small rear patios at ground floor. The profiled silhouette marks the identity of individual houses and adds interest to the skyline.
