Northcliff House

A challenging cliffside site in Johannesburg created an opportunity to design a unique family home. Set on a steep 40° incline, the house is accessed from a high-level road. A continuous spine stair provides the conceptual and physical link from the road above to the stream in the valley below.

A succession of terraces and internal spaces cascades down the ridge offering spectacular views of the landscape. The design maximises access to the outdoor space and environmental comfort in a climate that is dry and sunny with late afternoon thunderstorms in summer.
